David Barton : City in the Sky

What would you like to know?

I was born in the north of England in 1981 (at least people in the south claim it is in the north but it's in the middle really). I currently live in Bristol where I did my undergraduate degree in Mathematical Modelling (MEng first class honours). In September 2006 I finished my PhD in Nonlinear Dynamics/Dynamics of Time Delay Systems from BCAMN (the Bristol Centre for Applied Nonlinear Mathematics) at the University of Bristol. Currently (until September 2008), I am a Lloyds Tercentenary Foundation Fellow looking at the "Mathematical challenges of hybrid test engineering".

On 7th January 2006 I married Johanna . It was a nice winter day, unfortunately the church heating broke but everyone still enjoyed themselves. At least Johanna and I did! And we have enjoyed many more nice days together since.

When I have a bit of spare time I enjoy playing badminton with the University Badminton club. I'm still not very good but with a bit of practice I might be half decent one day. I also like watching films, running, photography, tinkering with computers, reading anything that is lying around, and generally trying to figure out how things work . My next project is to make us a new coffee table...

I love the great outdoors, I can think of few things better than just relaxing and taking in the scenery. I'd really love to take a tent, a camera and a few books and go wander around some of the Scottish highlands.

At university I am loosely involved with the Christian Union (BUCU) and I have started a new group for postgraduate Christians to meet up. I am currently a member of the student team at Christ Church Clifton, which I enjoy very much - it is both challenging and rewarding. Previously I was actively in the University Engineering society (TUBES) but after being a committee member for 4 years I've decided to let the new guys take over.
